The Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation (MBI) and Orange County Sheriff John Mina recently announced the arrest of 35 people in connection with a major drug trafficking operation. The investigation, dubbed Operation Outta Hand, began in 2021 and resulted in the seizure of over 339 kilograms of cocaine, 25 firearms, and $1.5 million in cash.
The Orlando Sentinal reports that the investigation revealed that a drug trafficking organization based in the Dominican Republic was shipping cocaine to Central Florida through the U.S. Postal Service. The drugs were then distributed to dealers in Orlando and other parts of the state.
The 35 people arrested face a variety of charges, including racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, trafficking in cocaine, and trafficking in fentanyl. They are currently being held in the Orange County Jail without bond.
“This is one of the largest drug trafficking operations we’ve seen in Central Florida in three decades,” said Sheriff Mina. “The arrests of these individuals and the seizure of these drugs has saved lives already in our community and will continue to save lives.”
MBI Director Ron Stucker added that the investigations leading to what is one of the biggest drug busts in Central Florida succeeded because of the cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Orlando Police Department.
“This investigation is a prime example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together,” said Stucker. “We are committed to keeping our community safe from the scourge of drug trafficking.”
